The aim of the visit was to meet project partners, learn about Galway’s night-time economy policies, and receive relevant information regarding the project’s implementation. The programme included meetings, thematic seminars, discussions, and study visits.

Galway, a city of approximately 90,000 residents, welcomes around 3 million tourists each year. With roughly 120 festivals organised annually, the city is often referred to in Ireland as a hub for nightlife and celebrations. According to local representatives, Galway’s main attraction is not its climate, but rather the friendliness of its people, its cultural offer, and its heritage. Even on weekdays, the city maintains an active and vibrant atmosphere during nighttime hours.

NITIES project partners together with the Mayor of Galway. 2026-02-03

About the Night-Time Economy

During the thematic seminar, participants were introduced to Ireland’s national night-time economy system and the development of Galway’s night-time economy action plan. The presentation on Ireland’s night-time economy focused on measures implemented at the national level. In order to ensure the broadest possible accessibility of activities for residents, funding is allocated both to private businesses and public institutions. Particular emphasis is placed on community-building, which is often considered one of the key indicators of successful policy.

The presentation of Galway’s action plan highlighted three core principles: safety, sustainability, and inclusivity. Participants discussed various implemented measures, including safety campaigns, training for night-time economy workers, communication partnerships, and initiatives promoting a wider diversity of nighttime activities. Among the most notable safety initiatives was the “Safe and Sound” campaign, aimed at increasing public awareness, as well as a remote learning platform for training.

While developing the action plan, the city consulted residents and conducted surveys to identify the most relevant issues and community needs. Based on these findings, training programmes now include topics such as sexual violence prevention, bystander intervention, and the risks associated with drink spiking drugs. The plan also includes measures to improve accessibility of nightlife environments for people with disabilities, as well as initiatives focused on youth inclusion and increasing engagement opportunities.

This visit provided an opportunity for NITIES project partners to meet, exchange experiences regarding project implementation in their respective countries, and discuss administrative and future activity-related matters. During the closed partner meeting, each city presented the activities implemented during the second semester of the project, and it was decided that future study visits will take place in Tallinn, Vilnius, Trieste, and Warsaw. Partners also emphasized the importance of communication and social media in sharing project results.

Project managers of the Vilnius Night Office. 2026-02-03

Study Visits and Cross-Sector Collaboration

During the visit, project partners were introduced to several successful initiatives implemented in Galway:

Claddagh Watch Patrols — a volunteer initiative aimed at reducing water-related accidents and suicides.
